Dennis is a little 10-year-old boy who lives with his mom. His dad passed away when he was very little. His mom works very hard every day as a tailor to make sure Dennis gets what he needs. His mom gets paid very little to alter her customers’ clothing but that’s the only thing she’s good at.
Dennis remembers his mom always tells him not to touch or play with the red silk dress inside his mom’s closet. It’s an anniversary gift from his dad to her mom right before he passed away so it has high sentimental value to his mom.
His mom always tells Dennis, this dress means a lot to her because his dad had saved all his money for 5 straight months to buy this expensive silk dress. She also promises to give the dress away to Dennis’ wife one day.
Dennis knows the dress is very expensive and his mom will never be able to have this kind of dress again if he ruins it.
Because of their financial hardship, Dennis and his mom have to move from place to place frequently. One day, Dennis and his mom have to move to a place near a cemetery complex.
In his new place, Dennis quickly finds children around his age to play with. The problem is they play around the cemetery and they’re imitating family members who are attending burials. His mom worries Dennis will get used to the cemetery life and decides this is not what she wants for Dennis.
She doesn’t want Dennis gets surrounded by death every day. So she decides to move out as soon as she’s able to.
Next, Dennis and his mom move to an old house near a public market. Quickly, Dennis make friends with most of the vendors there. His mom is not pleased because the vendors in the market are dishonest people who try to take as much money as possible out of their customers. They constantly tell lies to everyone they talk to.
His mom is worried Dennis will forever think like these vendors and be a liar. She doesn’t want that.
After a deliberate thought, she finds the best place for her and Dennis to move to. The next place they’re moving into is a place very close to a school. His mom thinks Dennis will have a lot of friends his age and be a good student because he’ll be surrounded by his teachers.
Mom’s Best Choice
Finally, this is the place that is good for Dennis.
One day, Dennis comes home while his mom is working altering a piece of clothing. He tells his mom that he doesn’t want to go to school anymore. His mom is upset and asking why Dennis would say such a thing. He says because education is useless.
His mom is very disappointed to what he says. His mom wants Dennis to get good education so he doesn’t have to be poor like his mom. But Dennis keeps saying no.
His mom gets up the chair and walks to her closet. To Dennis’ surprise, his mom takes out her valuable silk dress and cuts it with a pair of scissors into small pieces.
Dennis is shocked. He never sees his mom this mad. He knows how valuable that dress is to his mom. Dennis is sad his mom has to do that. He sobs and asks his mom why she did that.
His mom says “Dennis, these small pieces of silk are just like you. They’re nothing. They’re not a dress yet. Without education you’re just like a piece of silk. You’re not developed into a beautiful, valuable, useful thing.
Dennis becomes very sad. He realizes he makes a big mistake. He cries and promises to his mom that he will continue going to school until he finishes his education. That experience changes his life.
