Peter Bilello was married to his wife, Grace, for 50 years. They had only known each other for 40 days before tying the knot. The couple met after Peter’s mother introduced him to the 23-year-old beauty in their native Italy.
Peter, who was 35 at the time, fell in love at first sight and asked her to be his wife. Grace said yes and they had their wedding soon after. They were a very loving couple, always did things together, and inseparable ever since.
In the fall of 1964, Peter and Grace moved to Connecticut, where he still lives up to this day.
After moving to the United States, the couple had two children and four grandchildren.
In an interview with ABC News, Peter said “She was a very good wife, very good cook, very good mother. Wherever my wife would go, I go.”
In 2001, tragedy struck. Grace was diagnosed with cancer and the entire family was devastated by the news.
Hoping For A Miracle
However, Grace put up a good fight. Peter and Grace were together all the time through all the chemotherapy and radiation sessions.
Peter was very supportive. His main goal was to take care of his wife until the cancer was gone. Doctors, hospitals, and everything in between. It made a big difference. Grace overcame her cancer.
“I thought it was going to be okay,” he said. But three years later, the cancer came back and she had to go through more sessions.
When she was having a chemo, he sat down next to her bed, patiently waiting until it’s time to go home. At home, he did all the house work while she laid down on the couch.
“She was very sick after chemo,” Peter told ABC News.
In 2009, Bill had a fun idea. He signed his name on a dollar bill and he instructed Grace to sign hers on another bill.
Then Peter put those two dollars in his wallet.
The bills stayed there for a year, until Peter spent them by accident.
He came home and told Grace the news. That he couldn’t believe he had spent their dollar bills. Understandably, he was upset because the bills had major sentimental value.
Peter was sure he would never see the dollar bills again.
The dollar bills may have been gone, but the couple’s love kept going strong.
In 2014, after the couple celebrated their 50th anniversary, Grace, lost her battle to cancer.
Years after Grace’s death, Peter took his granddaughter, Ashley, to a sandwich shop for lunch.
He paid with a $10 bill, then the cashier handed him $3 back.
To his surprise, one of the dollar bills had Grace’s signature on it!
“It’s a miracle to get it back after 5 years,” says Peter. “Who knows how many million people got that dollar in their hands.”
He went straight to the cemetery and told his wife he got their dollar back.
Now, he makes sure the dollar is in a safe place.
About the dollar that has his signature on it? “Who knows where it is,” he says. “I’d be happy to get my dollar back”
