Tim is a ten-year-old boy who lives in Memphis, TN with his younger sister, Jenny, and both of their alcoholic parents. At a very young age, Tim and his sister are used to seeing their parents pass out on the floor every night after a binge drinking session.
As the older sibling, Tim does his best to protect and take care of Jenny. He knows his parents don’t care about him and his sister. In fact, he feels his parents don’t like kids in general. They just want to drink all day.
Often times, Jenny asks Tim to play doll with her and Tim doesn’t mind at all even though he doesn’t like dolls. He wants to be a good brother for Jenny. He knows they can’t depend on their parents so Tim wants to make sure Jenny knows he’s always there for her.
Accident Waiting To Happen
One night, Tim wakes up in the middle of the night and sees smoke in his bedroom. He quickly gets out of the bed and try to navigate his way out in the dark.
The house is on fire! Everything is burning. Tim is panicking. He doesn’t know what to do. He screams and yells for his parents and Jenny. He doesn’t hear any answer from them. The floor becomes very hot, the smokes is choking his throat and burning his eyes. Tim knows he must get out soon or he’s going to be burned alive.
At the same time, he doesn’t want to leave without knowing where Jenny and his parents are. All of a sudden, everything goes pitch black for Tim. He doesn’t remember anything after that moment.
Tim wakes up in a hospital. The fire department came just in time to save his life. However, no one else in his family survived the fire. Tim was the only survivor that night. Tim learned slowly learned what happened. Apparently, his dad had fallen asleep in the hallway while his cigarette was still lit. The cigarette quickly burned the house down.
His mom’s body was found on the kitchen floor. Apparently, she also had passed out from drinking too much. Jenny, on the other hand, was not asleep. She was trying to get out of her room but her dad’s body was blocking her bedroom door.
Tim is devastated. He is now all alone. He loses all of his family in an instant and in a very tragic way. Tim survives the fire but he has third-degree burns on 80% of his body.
The Child Protective Services enroll him to a new school in a different town. Nobody knows Tim and he is bullied relentlessly every day because of his burned skin.
Sometimes Tim wishes he never survived the fire but every time he remembers Jenny and how she died Tim gets a new jolt of motivation. He remembers the times when he and Jenny played doctor with her dolls and Tim decides he wants to be a doctor when he grows up.
Tim never gives up on his dream to become a doctor. All he can think about is to make Jenny proud of him. He studies very hard and gets a scholarship from a prominent medical school.
During his years in college, he meets a lovely woman named Sarah, who is studying to become a detox specialist for alcoholics. The reason is because Sarah’s father is an alcoholic and she wants to help people who struggle with alcoholism.
Tim tells Sarah about his late parents and sister. How his alcoholic parents literally caused a house fire that killed his entire family. Tim and Sarah quickly becomes very close.
Today, Dr. Timothy Akers is a well-known Pediatric Neurologist or a child brain specialist in his city. Tim and Sarah get married soon after they graduated from medical school. They have 3 beautiful children together.
Tim dedicates his public service to his sister that died way too soon in the house fire that night. Tim knows Jenny is looking down from heaven and very happy that he makes it to become a real doctor.
